Getting here and around

Waikīkī first, rental car later

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) sits between Pearl Harbor and downtown Honolulu. A transfer handles most Waikīkī arrivals; a carefully timed rental car handles windward, North Shore, and leeward days without paying to park all week.

Arrival

Choose the first transfer before the island loop

Direct

Taxi or rideshare

A taxi or rideshare provides a direct HNL-to-hotel transfer with luggage. Follow current airport pickup-zone instructions after landing.

Prearranged

Shared or private shuttle

A prearranged shuttle provides a named meeting point for larger groups. Check whether the service makes multiple hotel stops.

Public transit

TheBus

Check current routes, luggage rules, transfers, and the final walk before relying on transit after a long flight.

Island orientation

HNL, Honolulu, and the three major drive directions

Waikīkī is southeast of the airport. Pearl Harbor and Ko Olina lie west; Kailua and Kualoa lie across the Koʻolau Range; Haleʻiwa lies north through central Oʻahu.

  • Check live traffic before leaving and avoid resident commute peaks where possible.
  • The windward and North Shore routes each fill their own day.
  • Written directions are west for Pearl Harbor or Ko Olina, east across the mountains for Kailua and Kualoa, and north for Haleʻiwa.

Rental-car days

Pick up once, drive one direction, return before dinner

Pickup

Skip the unused first-night car

A late arrival, Waikīkī beach day, or central Honolulu day rarely justifies immediate rental and hotel parking.

Direction

Group stops on the same side

Pearl Harbor with west-side time, Kailua with windward time, and Haleʻiwa with North Shore time prevent repeated crossings.

Return

Allow for a slow return

A short island distance can still produce a slow return. Eat near the return route or walk from the hotel after parking the car.
